The “green gold” is hidden away in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The only emerald deposit in all of Central Europe can be found in the Habachtal valley. Hunting for the gem is an adventure in itself, but the scenic beauty is equally inspiring. Among the highlights is the Emerald Path in the Habachtal valley, one of the most picturesque tours for all ages. But that’s certainly far from everything this magical region has to offer.
Hiking on the Emerald Path
This family-friendly themed hiking path is an experience for all ages. It’s a great introduction to the scenic beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park for the entire family, with eleven stages dedicated to the Habachtal valley’s geology and mineralogy. You’ll find several rest stops along the Habachtal valley Emerald Path, such as the Enzianhütte, the old Moaalm, the new Thüringerhütte, and the Almgasthof Alpenrose.
Guided emerald hunt
Guided emerald tours head out to the Habachtal valley twice a week in the summer season, from mid/late May to early/mid-October. The tour starts at the Almgasthof Alpenrose, which can be reached either on foot or with the Smaragdexpress bus. Start your hunt for gems in the Leckbachrinne. You can pick up your emerald prospecting equipment at Almgasthof Alpenrose.
Hiking in the Habachtal valley
There’s something for everyone in the Habachtal valley, with numerous routes of all difficulties. Choose the right route for you. We will be happy to advise you at reception and find the ideal tour together.

- Neue Thüringerhütte – 3 hr – 7.7 km – medium
- Karalm – 2.5 hr – 5.3 km – medium
- Elfer-Rundweg – 3.5 hr – 4.2 km – hard
- Larmkogel – 5 hr – 9.1 km – hard
Mountain bike routes
You don’t have to hike to marvel at the beauty of the world-renowned Habachtal valley; the route can easily be covered by mountain bike. If you don’t have one to hand, you can borrow an e-bike in the castle.
National Park exhibition on emeralds & crystals
The exhibition dedicated to emeralds and crystals in the Heimat- und Mineralienmuseum Bramberg (Local and Mineral Museum) is the perfect complement to a trip to the Habachtal. You’ll find a display of the full variety of our local minerals. Lose yourself in the fascinating world of geology and learn more about the deposits of minerals and gems in the region.
