The 900-year-old walls not only conceal countless stories about the castle – culture is still very much alive in the region today. Lived culture, anchored in tradition: cultural highlights of the region
When late summer begins in SalzburgerLand, a very special time arrives with the farmers’ autumn – the 5th season in SalzburgerLand – the farmers’ autumn.
The months are characterised by harvest, enjoyment and community life. Old customs come to life all over the region. Experience traditional rural life and musical diversity up close: at cattle drives, village and farm festivals, concerts, musicians’ get-togethers and folklore evenings, craft demonstrations, yodelling courses or on musical hikes and themed trails.
A time that makes the origins authentically tangible – and creates memories that last.
Once a year – during the farmers’ autumn – Mittersill becomes a meeting place for connoisseurs: at the traditional strudel festival, everything revolves around one of the region’s most popular specialities.
In the morning, Hintergasse and Lebzeltergasse are transformed into a delightful promenade. Over 20 different strudel variations invite you to try them – from sweet classics such as apple and curd cheese to savoury and creatively interpreted specialities.
Accompanied by musical entertainment and a varied children’s programme, a lively, enjoyable atmosphere is created for young and old alike.
A festival that combines tradition, culinary delights and conviviality in a particularly delicious way.
Mittersill: Felbermeilinger field
Every year, up to 2,000 equestrian sports enthusiasts watch the exciting competitions. The programme includes horses of national and international class. The exciting programme includes various competitions, such as several trotting races, a trotting race, a Noriker race, a pony riding race and a pony trotting race for the youngsters.
Krampus
St Nicholas, accompanied by angels and a pack of Krampus, praises and reprimands the children and hands out presents from the gift basket. The Krampus is a frightening figure in the company of St Nicholas. He is a figure of Advent customs. While St Nicholas gives presents to the good children, the naughty ones are punished by Krampus.
Tresterer
The Tresterer tradition has been practised for hundreds of years. There are three different “disguises”: the Schirchpercht, the Schönpercht (Tresterer) and Hans Wurst. The Schirchperchten enter the hallway or farmhouse parlour with their masks and loud bells and jingles to wake up and drive out evil. Then Hans Wurst arrives, scares away the Schirchperchten and knocks a cross on the floor. Then the first Schönpercht (Tresterer) arrives and begins the beautiful dance. All the others follow and together they drive away the evil. The music is framed by clarinets. They wish good luck and blessings for the New Year.
Who says that polo is just a sport for green meadows and beautiful days? At the annual Snow Polo World Cup in Kitzbühel, the sporting elite gather at the gates of the town every January. Riding on horseback, the aim is to hit a small ball with a wooden mallet into the opponent’s goal. Accompanied by social events and VIP guests, snow polo is one of the most beautiful upscale winter traditions in the region.
