Hotel Schloss Mittersill writes golf history
Golf with history, a castle full of legends
Those staying at Schloss Mittersill experience golf in one of the most beautiful regions in Europe – in a place with golfing history: golf was already closely associated with Schloss Mittersill in the 1950s. International guests such as Bing Crosby and Bob Hope played on Baron Hubert von Pantz’s private golf course. Clark Gable, a passionate golfer and regular guest of the Sport & Shooting Club, also left his mark on the glamorous golfing history of the hotel. The development of the GC Kitzbühel-Kaps is closely linked to the castle.
The history of the golf club Mittersill
The idea of building a golf course in Mittersill already existed in the 1930s. The pioneer of this plan was Baron Hubert von Pantz, with his legendary “Sport & Shooting Club Schloss Mittersill”. Lord Edward, Duke of Windsor, the future King of England, Prince Ferdinand of Liechtenstein and many other prominent personalities supported the golf course project, as did the mayor of Mittersill at the time, Martin Ploch. However, the Second World War prevented the realisation of a golf course in the Tauern mountains.
Founding member of golf courses in Mittersill & Kitzbühel
In 1948, Baron Pantz returned to Europe for the first time after the war and of course immediately visited Schloss Mittersill. 1953 saw the reopening of the Sport & Shooting Club. Guests included Prince Sadruddin Kahn, who got engaged in Mittersill, Henry Ford, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. The latter two were good golfers and reportedly very fond of a small golf course that Pantz had laid out himself at low cost. Today, we are not only one of the founding hotels of the Hohe Tauern Golf Club, but the castle was also closely linked to the golfing history of the region from an early stage and played a key role in the development of the Kitzbühel-Kaps GC.
