Coco Chanel as a guest at Schloss Mittersill

The icon drew inspiration for one of her most famous creations here at the castle

Where history meets style, one of the most influential women of the 20th century found inspiration

When Coco Chanel was a guest at Schloss Mittersill, she had long been part of the international elite – and yet it was precisely this place that fuelled her creativity in a special way. Rumour has it that she had more than just admiration for the lord of the castle at the time. She found inspiration in this special atmosphere – and allowed the castle itself to inspire her with new ideas.

Coco Chanel is one of the most influential personalities in fashion history – her style still characterises what we understand as timeless elegance today

Coco Chanel was already an icon during her lifetime and embodied the lifestyle of high society like no other.

Her name has long since become a legend: a synonym for elegance, luxury and the emancipation of women. She was the only female fashion designer to be counted among the most influential personalities of the 20th century by Time Magazine. However, she was by no means born with these attributes. Born Gabrielle Chanel in 1883 in a French poorhouse, she was born into impoverished circumstances. Her father was unstable and unable to provide for his family.

So Coco Chanel spent her childhood in a strict orphanage. Slept in an unheated dormitory. And learnt her trade as a dressmaker under the rigid regime of convent nuns. With her ingenious talent and financial start-up aid from her frequently changing and sometimes very wealthy lovers from the financial aristocracy and the arts, Coco Chanel finally managed to rise from humble beginnings with a hat studio to fashion heaven.

She revolutionised the world of women’s fashion. She liberated style-conscious women from the corset of a constricting fashion dictate in the truest sense of the word. Coco Chanel was a pioneer of modern and functional women’s fashion with calf-length skirts or airy trousers, loosely belted tops and short haircuts for self-confident and self-determined women.

She also set standards commercially – her fragrance Chanel N°5, made famous not least by Marilyn Monroe, is still one of the most successful perfumes and best-selling fragrances in the world today and launched the rise of an entire industry.

“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”

In love & Inspired by Mittersill Castle

Coco Chanel was enchanted by the charm of the lord of the castle, fell in love and repeatedly spent romantic days at Schloss Mittersill. It was also here that she drew inspiration for one of her most famous creations: the classic Chanel jacket. The uniform of a liftboy from Schloss Mittersill was the inspiration for this timelessly beautiful and elegant piece of clothing, which to this day is a firm favourite in the wardrobes of successful businesswomen, actresses and other female stars around the world.

The legendary Chanel jacket: origins in Mittersill Castle

In autumn 2014, the Chanel fashion house and its then head designer Karl Lagerfeld paid homage to Salzburg: one of the highlights of a glitzy and glamorous fashion show was a tribute to the legendary Chanel jacket and the story of its creation, which originated in Schloss Mittersill. As a tribute to the dazzling personality of Coco Chanel, a luxury suite at Schloss Mittersill was named after her. Stay where Coco Chanel once created a masterpiece of fashion.
