Golf in Mittersill

A varied pleasure

Schloss Mittersill’s history richly reflects the love of golf: Clark Gable visited the castle several times and was one of the most famous personalities in the Sports & Shooting Club. His passion was for all the beautiful things in life--especially the game of golf. Nowadays, Clark Gable’s golf bag is still kept at Schloss Mittersill and is reminiscent of that sporty, glamorous era.

The History of Golf Course Mittersill

The idea of building a golf course in Mittersill was alive and well in the 1930s.

The pioneer of this plan was Baron Hubert von Pantz, with his legendary "Sport & Shooting Club Schloss Mittersill". His Royal Highness, Edward, Duke of Windsor, the later English King, and Prince Ferdinand of Liechtenstein, as well as many other prominent personalities supported the golf course project, as did the Mittersiller Mayor Martin Ploch.

The Second World War, however, prevented the realization of a golf course in Mittersill.

In 1948 Baron Pantz returned to Europe, and therefore also Schloss Mittersill, for the first time after the war. In 1953 the Sport & Shooting Club reopened. Guests included Prince Sadruddin Kahn, who announced his engagement in Mittersill, Henry Ford, Bob Hope, and Bing Crosby.

The latter two were good golfers and supposedly very pleased with a smaller golf course, which Pantz had designed himself quite cost-effectively.
