Top Excursions Around Mittersill

Where culture and tradition meet nature

There are many different destinations around Mittersill that you will want to visit and explore. In the province of Salzburg and the adjacent Tyrol, unforgettable experiences await. Whether you prefer city tourism or cultural experiences, natural monuments or shopping trips, you will find fascinating highlights and little adventures in the proximity of Schloss Mittersill, showing you some of the most beautiful spots in the region. The castle team has collected and described some of their personal highlights for you here.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road (“Grossglockner Hochalpenstraße”)

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is Austria's most famous alpine road. It was opened in 1935 and has now become wider, safer, more comfortable, and spans 48 km. It blends harmoniously into the landscape and delivers breathtaking views--an experience for young and old that gives uninterrupted fascination and enthusiasm. The hearts of vintage car friends will inevitably beat faster when feelings of freedom and limitless possibilities set in. The road is in proximity to Mittersill and the castle, and is easily accessible.

Krimmler Waterfalls and Water Wonder Worlds (“WasserWunderWelten”)

The Krimml waterfalls in the province of Salzburg are the highest in Europe and fifth highest in the world, attracting numerous visitors every year. The “WasserWunderWelten” lies at the foot of this gigantic natural spectacle and is a modern adventure center for all ages.

High Mountain Reservoirs Kaprun

Another incredible excursion near Schloss Mittersill in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park are Kaprun’s impressive reservoirs at 2,000 meters altitude. Embedded in the imposing rocks of the Hohe Tauern, there are two reservoirs: Moserboden and Wasserfallboden. These fascinating sights are accessible via the Lärchwand cable car. The information center in Kaprun has plenty of information on the topics of hydropower and electricity for those particularly interested.

Salzburg

It is a playful lightness that makes Salzburg, a miniature cosmopolitan city, so unmistakable: the silhouette of the fortress, cathedral and church towers of the charming Baroque town on the northern edge of the Alps. Salzburg is so beautiful that it has long been a UNESCO World Heritage Site and so famous that its sights are among the best known in the world. It is also incredibly popular and therefore will most likely be on your to-do and to-see lists during your vacation in Mittersill.

Innsbruck

The twofold Olympic city (1964 and 1976) is a centre for sports par excellence. Innsbruck, like no other city in Europe, offers its guests diverse and high-quality experiences in both the summer as well as in the winter, such as the landmark structures Goldenes Dachl, the Tiroler Landestheater, the Hofburg and the Ferdinandeum, as well as the Alpine Zoo high above the rooftops of the city with 1,500 alpine animals. Among the most popular destinations around Mittersill are the Swarovski Crystal Worlds (“Swarovski Kristallwelten”) with their sparkling treasures.

Zell am See

The small town of Zell am See has around 9,900 inhabitants and was a market place until 1928, when it became a city. Zell am See perfectly combines fresh air and crystal clear water and a visit to Zell will promote rest and good health, as the town has been a health resort since 1961. The lake Zeller See has drinking water quality. And the city’s local “house” mountain, the 2,000m high Schmittenhöhe, invites you to enjoy hikes and fascinating mountain storms.

Weißsee

A family ski area during the winter and an exciting destination near Mittersill in the summer: the Weißsee Glacier World is especially popular among those with children. You will find many beautiful walking and hiking trails up to 2,600 m above sea level, which are also suitable for young feet--beautiful views are, of course, included. The panoramic road in Stubachtal will take you to the most beautiful panoramic points of the mountain. Maybe you will even spot some chamois or marmots!
